When You Should Seek Same-Day Care

Not every dental issue needs a same-day visit, but you should contact us promptly if you notice:

Persistent, severe toothache that isn’t easing (this often means the nerve inside the tooth is already affected)
A tooth that’s completely knocked out or badly loosened (the longer this waits, the lower the chance of saving it)
A cracked, broken, or fractured tooth with pain (the crack may already reach the nerve, and delay can make it worse)
Gum swelling or an abscess, especially if it’s spreading toward your face (this can mean an infection is spreading)
Bleeding from your gums or mouth that won’t stop on its own
A filling, crown, or denture that’s come loose and is causing discomfort (exposed tooth structure is more prone to irritation or infection)
Swelling or pain around a wisdom tooth (this can flare up repeatedly, so it’s worth an early assessment)
Ongoing pain after a previous root canal treatment (this can point to lingering infection at the treated site)

What to Do Before You Arrive

These steps can help ease discomfort on your way to us, but they’re not a substitute for treatment:

Rinse gently with warm salt water to help keep the area clean
For facial swelling, apply a cold compress wrapped in a cloth to the outside of your cheek, avoiding direct contact between ice and skin
Avoid very hot, cold, or hard foods until you’re seen
If a tooth has been knocked out, only handle it by the crown (the white part) and avoid touching the root
Try not to chew on the affected side
Sleeping with your head slightly elevated can reduce the throbbing that comes from blood pooling in the area
Don’t place any medication directly against your gum or the affected area, and avoid poking it with a toothpick or sharp object, as both can make things worse
If a filling or crown has come loose, don’t try to fix it yourself with an unregulated online “repair kit.” Under Hong Kong law, dental treatment must be carried out by a dentist registered in Hong Kong

The Golden Window for a Knocked-Out Tooth

If a tooth is completely knocked out, how you handle it can affect whether it can be saved. Here’s what to do:

Pick the tooth up by the crown only, never touching the root
If it’s visibly dirty, rinse it gently with clean water, without scrubbing the root
Try to place it back in its socket if you can. If not, store it in milk or in the patient’s own saliva, without letting it dry out or wrapping it in a tissue
Contact us and come in right away. The sooner you’re seen, the better the chances of saving the tooth

This is generally best done within about 30 minutes, but even if more time has passed, it’s still worth coming in so a dentist can assess the tooth.

If you’d like same-day, complete treatment, contacting a private dental clinic directly is usually the faster route.
