Dental Implants

Per the PPDH schedule, a single implant has three parts: an implant treatment plan at about HK$1,000–$3,000 (excluding CT scan), surgical placement at about HK$17,600–$20,000 per fixture, and a single implant crown at about HK$11,200–$30,000, about HK$29,800–$53,000 in total; implant components, CT scans and laboratory work are not included in these ranges. If there is not enough bone and a bone graft or sinus lift is needed, the cost rises accordingly. Usually an oral examination, dental X-rays and a 3D CBCT scan, available at both our clinics. The CBCT scan shows your jawbone volume and the position of nerves and the sinus in 3D, helping your dentist plan where the implant goes and whether a bone graft is needed. Your dentist will also review your medical history and gum health, and any gum disease is normally treated first.

Swelling, bruising and soreness for a few days are common, usually peaking around days 2–3 before settling. Less common risks include infection, numbness of the lip if a nerve in the lower jaw is affected (usually temporary), sinus problems with upper-jaw implants, and the implant not bonding firmly with the bone. Smoking, poorly controlled diabetes and poor oral hygiene raise these risks, and your dentist will go through them with you before treatment.

For the first 24 hours, stick to soft, lukewarm foods such as yoghurt, mashed potato or congee, chew on the other side, and avoid straws, vigorous rinsing and spitting so the blood clot isn’t disturbed. For the first week, avoid very hot, spicy or hard foods, skip strenuous exercise for a few days, and avoid smoking and alcohol. Most people gradually return to normal eating after about two weeks, though you should still avoid very hard foods for a while.

Often yes, but you may need a bone graft first. In the upper back jaw, a sinus lift can add height: a minimally invasive (crestal) lift suits moderate bone loss and can often be done on the same day as the implant, while the lateral window technique suits more severe loss and usually needs about 4–9 months of healing before the implant. Your dentist decides based on your X-rays and a CBCT scan.

Possibly, but you’ll need an assessment first. Smoking reduces blood flow to the gums and raises the risk of infection and implant failure, so your dentist will usually advise stopping or cutting down around the time of surgery. Poorly controlled diabetes slows healing and raises infection risk; if your blood sugar is well managed, you can discuss implants with your dentist. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may be recommended to protect the implant.
