Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Usually about 12 to 24 months. Milder cases may be shorter, while more complex bite problems take longer. Your dentist estimates the number of aligners and the approximate timeline from a digital scan; the actual course depends on your examination.
How many hours a day do I wear the aligners? Do I remove them to eat?
Wear the aligners about 20–22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink hot or coloured drinks and brush. Wearing them for less lengthens treatment and affects results; because they’re removable, cleaning your teeth and eating are easier than with fixed braces.
Does Invisalign hurt?
Each time you switch to a new set, you may feel mild tightness, pressure or soreness as the teeth move. This is a normal adjustment and usually takes about 3–4 days or longer to ease, depending on your pain tolerance. Unlike fixed braces, there are no wires or brackets rubbing the mouth.
How do I know if Invisalign is right for me?
Invisalign suits teenagers and adults and can treat many alignment and bite problems. Whether it suits you depends on how your teeth are positioned, your bite, and whether you can wear the aligners for enough hours each day; some more complex cases may be better suited to fixed braces. Your dentist will examine you and take a digital scan before discussing the options.
How soon will I see results with Invisalign?
Changes in alignment usually become visible gradually as treatment progresses, and the full result comes at the end of treatment. You normally change to a new set of aligners every 1–2 weeks, so the teeth move step by step; afterwards you’ll need a retainer to keep the result.
What is the difference between Invisalign and traditional braces?
Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners that are less noticeable and make cleaning and eating easier, but you need the discipline to wear them 20–22 hours a day. Fixed braces are bonded to the teeth, so there’s nothing to remember to wear, but cleaning is harder and adjustments are usually every 4–6 weeks. Treatment length depends on the case for both; see Braces.
Why might Invisalign not work as expected?
Common reasons are not wearing the aligners for enough hours, not changing aligners or attending reviews on schedule, not wearing the retainer afterwards so the teeth drift back, and more complex cases that need the plan adjusted. Following your dentist’s instructions and attending regular reviews helps keep treatment on track; if an aligner stops fitting well, contact the clinic.
How much does Invisalign cost?
Based on the Prince Philip Dental Hospital (PPDH) private patient fee schedule, Invisalign ranges from about HK$45,000 (single arch) to HK$80,000 (both arches); the actual cost depends on your teeth, the number of aligners and treatment length. For reference only; this is not our clinic’s actual pricing, and your fee is confirmed after an examination. See the full fee reference.
Can teenagers have Invisalign?
Yes. Invisalign Teen is available for teenagers whose permanent teeth have largely come through and who can wear the aligners consistently; suitability is confirmed by the dentist after assessing dental development and bite.
Do I need a retainer after treatment, and how much does it cost?
Yes. After treatment you must wear a retainer as directed to keep the teeth in their new position and prevent relapse. Based on the Prince Philip Dental Hospital (PPDH) private patient fee schedule, a retainer is about HK$1,500–$2,500 per visit. For reference only; this is not our clinic’s actual pricing, and your fee is confirmed after an examination.
What are clear aligners?
Clear aligners (also called invisible braces) are removable, transparent trays that move the teeth gradually. Invisalign is one brand of clear aligner.
