Is laughing gas safe, and who shouldn't have it?
Used with a dentist’s assessment and monitoring throughout, laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is a gentle, safe form of sedation; the dose can be adjusted to how you respond, and it wears off quickly once the mask is removed. Your dentist will check your medical history first. It’s generally not suitable during pregnancy (especially the first trimester), for people with severe breathing conditions (such as COPD, severe asthma or a blocked nose), or after recent middle-ear or eardrum surgery, so let your dentist know about any of these.
Will I be asleep with laughing gas?
No. Laughing gas gives light sedation: within a few minutes you feel calm and relaxed, but you stay awake and can talk to your dentist and follow instructions. It has a mild pain-relieving effect, and local anaesthetic is still used where the treatment needs it. If you want a break, agree on a signal with your dentist beforehand, such as raising your left hand.
Can I drive or go back to work after laughing gas?
The effects wear off soon after the gas is stopped. With laughing gas alone, most adults can drive or go back to work the same day: you breathe pure oxygen at the end, rest at the clinic for about 15–30 minutes, and leave once the team confirms your alertness is back to normal. If laughing gas is combined with an oral sedative or pain medication, you’ll need someone to drive you. Children should go home with a parent or guardian.
Can children have laughing gas at the dentist?

Are there other sedation options besides laughing gas?
Yes. Deeper sedation such as IV (intravenous) sedation is generally used for more complex procedures or severe dental anxiety. It’s given alongside local anaesthetic, with your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels and breathing monitored throughout. You’ll usually need to avoid food and drink for at least 6–8 hours beforehand and have an adult take you home. Agreeing a stop signal with your dentist beforehand, bringing headphones with music, or deep breathing can also help you feel calmer.
How much does laughing gas sedation cost?
Based on the Prince Philip Dental Hospital (PPDH) private patient fee schedule, inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide) is about HK$5,000–$10,000 per hour. The schedule lists it as a separate item under paediatric dentistry, and it doesn’t include the dental treatment itself. The actual fee depends on how long it’s used and the treatment involved.
